Description

The Cisco 850 Series of secure broadband and wireless routers is part of the Cisco Integrated Services Router portfolio. Designed for small offices, the routers provide secure WAN connectivity with optional integrated 802.11b/g WLANs in a single device. Easy setup allows the Cisco 850 Series to be deployed at small remote offices and small businesses, and remote management features enable IT managers and service providers to provide better support at remote sites.

Cisco 850 Series integrated services routers are fixed-configuration routers that support broadband cable and Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) over analog telephone lines connections in small offices. They provide the performance needed to run concurrent services, including firewall and encryption for VPNs and optional 802.11b/g for wireless networking. The Cisco Router and Security Device Manager (SDM) Web-based configuration tool simplifies setup and deployment, and centralized management capabilities give network managers visibility and control of router configurations at the remote site.

Cisco 857 is a great replacement for C837

For small offices we generally used to install Cisco 837s (and the 857 is a lower cost replacement). These routers are more expensive to buy than say, Netgear DG834, but are totally reliable. Of course it doesn't take many support calls to make a cheaper product work out more expensive. For example, you never seem to have to reboot a Cisco ADSL router.

I agree that once you move away from SDM Express, the router can be tricky to configure. They're still really intended for networking people (e.g. who are used to IOS on corporate routers), rather than SOHO users (despite the name!). However for remote users (e.g. home workers or branch offices) they are hard to beat on functionality, deployment options and reliability.

Good, but quirky!

If you buy one of these, be prepared for problems getting it to connect to your ADSL provider.
Unlike the 'cheapie' ADSL router/modem offerings, these are much more complicated to configure, and not as easy as Cisco would have you believe.

Depending on the telco equipment that you are connecting (the DSLAM) you may need to tinker considerably with the configuration to get a successful connection. It took me several hours, and I'm familiar with the Cisco config routine.

Once it's working, it's a very good method of securely accessing the Internet, but just be wary that if you config the router in the office, and then ship it to a remote site, the config may not work.

Oh, and SDM isn't all it's cracked up to be either :-)
