Case Study 4

I definitely recommend the WD Live TV Hub

I had a few videos and photos on my laptop that I used to watch with my wife, and after days out, we would copy the new photos and videos to the laptop and plug it into the TV in the lounge for a better viewing. We had done this for a long time and I started to worry about the video connector on my laptop, so I decided something more permanent and user friendly was needed and it needed a remote control!

Photograph of DVD collection and XBOX1I looked at many media streamers and decided on the Western Digital TV Live Hub, as this is fitted with a 1Tb internal drive that can be used as a NAS drive to store all my other content such as backups of my laptop and office PC, it would then make this content available to any PC on the network. Installation was simple, HDMI lead to the TV, power to the wall and CAT5 cable to my hub which also gave us big screen access to youtube videos and flickr photos.

A great feature of the WD Live TV Hub is that it is able to synchronise content from my laptop and office PC, so any photos or videos on them will automatically be copied to it. The WD Live TV Hub manages to play all of the various types of video content that I have, including High Definition trailers that I’ve downloaded from the internet. I have also read that it is able to play DVD disc images, with full menus etc, although I haven’t got as far as converting all our DVD films yet.

Photograph of DVD collection and XBOX1We have had a lot of use out of our WD Live TV Hub and our family and friends also think it’s great, but I wanted all this content available in the family room as well, so I can still watch all my content on lads night when we are banished from the lounge. Fortunately Western Digital has thought of this too, with the Western Digital Live, this box has the same capabilities, but without the internal drive. I didn’t have a network cable in the family room and I knew that wireless reception was bad in there, so I also purchased a Western Digital Livewire kit. This consists of two boxes and each one of those is plugged into a mains socket in the rooms you wish to link together, press a button on each box and they are securely linked together, all that is needed then is to plug your network cables into each box (in my case, a WD Live in the family room and my router in the lounge) and I have all my content available in two rooms.
