ADSL routers range from the free, and often more basic models supplied by your Broadband Provider to models with more advanced features such as built-in VOIP and VPN. Brands such as Cisco, Draytek and Netgear have a wide range of routers available to suit all needs and budgets, so whether you want a basic model to simply get you online or something a bit more sophisticated which gives you some of the more advanced features then there's a whole range to choose from.

Most routers these days have a wireless access point built-in meaning that there is no need to purchase one separately. The router gets you online whilst the wireless access point lets you connect devices to it without the need for wires. This is perfect for example if you want to sit on the sofa surfing the internet or if you want to use your iPod to surf the internet.

Most wireless networks these days operate on 'g' band which gives a theoretical maximum data rate of 54mbps and a distance (or reach) of 125 feet. If you're looking for the fastest speed and the greatest reach then you need to be looking at routers with the latest technology which is the standard 'n'. The standard 802.11n includes has improved speed and reach achieving speeds of up to 150mbps and an internal range of 230 feet. In other words you can technically be up to 230 feet away from the router and still connect a wireless device to it.

It's important to bear in mind that the speeds and distances quoted by manufacturers are the fastest and longest possible in ideal conditions. There are many factors around the home, such as location of the router and interference which can affect these maximums significantly. For example if your home has thick, stone walls you may find that your wireless reach is significantly impacted. In these instances you may be better off considering Homeplug products which utilise your home's main electricity circuit. For more info on Homeplug visit our dedicated Homeplug section.
