Home theatre systems consist of an amplifier and speakers connected to a TV or projector and a source component (Media Centre PC, DVD Player or Video Streamer). Speakers are usually in a 5.1 layout which consists of a front left speaker, a front right speaker, a centre speaker, a left rear speaker and a right rear speaker. The remaining channel (the .1) is for the subwoofer. Home cinema is available in more than 5.1 channels, a 7.1 system adds side channels between the fronts and rears and a 9.1 system adds a stereo pair of front height speakers.

Due to the complexity of choosing an array of components, many people prefer to purchase a “Home Theatre in a Box” which will include all of the components necessary. The Samsung HT-C6930W is an excellent advanced example of this thinking, the kit includes 8 speakers, and a single box that is the amplifier, radio and Blu-Ray player, which also has Samsungs Internet@TV software installed, giving wireless access to Youtube, BBC iPlayer and soon Lovefilm.
